A regular dental cleaning, also commonly called a “prophy” or your 6 month cleaning, involves cleaning the bacteria off the teeth and just beneath the gum line. A prophy is performed typically twice a year to maintain healthy gums and teeth and is a routine and preventive procedure.

These appointments are performed by one of our dental hygienists. The plaque and hardened plaque will be removed using ultrasonic and hand scalers. The hygienist will then polish your teeth. They can make recommendations for taking better care of your mouth and demonstrate proper oral care techniques.

Once a year, at your prophy appointment, the doctor will come in to do a yearly exam that will consist of a general check-up, an oral cancer screening, updated radiographs, and updated gum measurements to check the health of your gums.
